Key Spots on Kauai That You Can’t Miss

Kauai, The Garden Island of Hawaii, is the oldest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is a paradise where lush greenery meets dramatic coastlines, where waterfalls cascade from towering cliffs and tranquility invites you to slow down and connect with nature. While the island offers countless treasures, there are a few places which are absolutely essential for you to experience while on the island.

Coastal view of the Na Pali coast and Pacific Ocean

Na Pali coast offers unparalleled views and a sense of untouched wilderness.

      Na Pali Coast

The Na Pali Coast is one of the most iconic sights in all of Hawaii. With emerald cliffs rising abruptly from the Pacific Ocean, it’s no wonder that this landscape has been immortalized in films like Jurassic Park and The Descendants. I visited Kauai for the first time in 1992 (during the same period Jurassic Park was in production there) and I found that the best way to experience this exciting coastal wonderland is by boat - either through a guided or private tour. Doing so will offer you unparalleled views of sea caves, towering waterfalls and wildlife such as dolphins and sea turtles. For the more adventurous, hiking the Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast provides a more immersive experience, although it’s a challenging 17-kilometer trek best suited for seasoned hikers.

          Waimea Canyon

Known as the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific,” Waimea Canyon offers jaw-dropping views of craggy cliffs, red rock formations and lush valleys. A drive through this natural wonder takes you to a series of scenic overlooks, each offering a unique perspective of the canyon’s striking beauty. I saw this during a helicopter tour and it was absolutely breathtaking! If you’re feeling adventurous, there are hiking trails that descend into the canyon, revealing hidden waterfalls and that provide opportunities to explore the land up close. Don’t miss the breathtaking sight from the Waimea Canyon Lookout, where the panorama of deep valleys and lush green cliffs are a photographer’s dream.

View of the Wailua Falls pouring of of a cliff into a lake.

Wailua Falls, is a double-tiered waterfall on Kauai's east side, cascades 24 meters into a serene pool below.

            Wailua Falls

Tucked within the island’s eastern region, Wailua Falls is one of Kauai's most famous and easily accessible waterfalls. At 24 meters, this cascading beauty is particularly stunning after rain, as the water flows vigorously down into a serene pool below. The waterfall is visible from the road, but for those who enjoy a little adventure, a short trail leads you to a closer view.

Coastal view of Hanalei Pier and the island mountains in the background

Enjoy the beauty of Hanalei Pier, on Kauai’s north shore.

              Hanalei Bay and Hanalei Town

Hanalei Bay, on Kauai’s north shore, is often regarded as one of the island’s most picturesque beaches. Framed by jagged mountains and lined with golden sand, it offers calm waters perfect for swimming, stand-up paddle boarding, or simply soaking in the natural beauty. I love this region as it feels very “small town meets idyllic beachside.” After a day at the beach, you should wander through Hanalei Town, where quaint shops, local cafes and charming art galleries offer a relaxed atmosphere. Be sure to try some local poke or a refreshing shaved ice while exploring this laid-back town.

                  Spouting Horn

On the southern coast, the Spouting Horn is a natural wonder that showcases Kauai’s volcanic origins. As waves crash into the shore, water is forced through a natural lava tube, creating a dramatic spout of water that shoots into the air like a geyser. The sight is mesmerizing, particularly at sunset, when the golden light reflects off the ocean, creating an unforgettable moment.

View of the Hanakapiai Beach with travelers walking by the cliffs

Hanakapiai Beach is a remote and stunning coastline nestled along Kauai's Na Pali Coast, is known for its golden sands, emerald cliffs and powerful waves.

                    Hanakapiai Beach and Trail

For those seeking an off-the-beaten-path adventure, the Hanakapiai Trail and Beach offer a blend of stunning scenery and challenge. The hike begins at Ke’e Beach and takes you through dense jungle to the rugged Hanakapiai Beach, known for its beauty and danger. While the waters here are often too rough for swimming, the journey to the beach offers incredible views of the Na Pali cliffs and coastline.
