More About Wailua & Kapaa
Located just 15 minutes from Lihue Airport, the Wailua-Kapaa area is comprised of two towns that blend together almost seamlessly. While the beaches of the city are a top attraction, the historically rich area and easily accessible outdoor activities captivate visitors from all around.
It would be hard to miss the Wailua River as you explore the area, 20 miles long, it's the largest navigable river in Hawaii. Originating from the 5,148-foot Mount Waialeale, the Wailua River weaves through the landscape, feeding waterfalls as it makes its way toward the Pacific Ocean. The most well-known waterfalls to stem from the Wailua River are the Opaekaa and Wailua. Featured in films and television shows, both waterfalls are very accessible making them a must-see for all travelers.
Between the towns of Wailua and Kapaa is the iconic Nounou Mountain. Known as the Sleeping Giant, Hawaiian legends tell tales of a giant that was tricked into eating rocks, sleepy from the heavy meal, the giant took a nap and to this day hasn't awoken. The Sleeping Giant Trail is about a 2-mile hike featuring shaded forests and breathtaking views.
When it comes to beaches, the Royal Coconut Coast shines. Lydgate Beach Park is a popular area thanks to the lava rock wall that shields the park from the open ocean. Kealia Beach Park has a long sand-bar and provides a nice surf break. And Kalapaki Beach offers calm conditions perfect for keiki (children).
