Traveling with Babies, Toddlers & Tweens

Traveling with your children provides opportunities that are filled with wonderful, lifelong memories. Growing up, my parents figured out ways to create vacation experiences for our family that were balanced with fun, education and, most importantly, rest. However, in modern times of perpetual “next level” busyness, curating such well-planned vacations can oftentimes be a last-minute task (which is no fun whatsoever). As Benjamin Franklin notably stated: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Here are some tips to help you plan family vacations that include little ones with ease.

      Avoid Red-Eye Flights

Red-eye flights oftentimes provide great cost savings – however, you and your family may end losing needed rest as a result. As you know, babies and young children typically sleep their best at night when there’s very little audible and visual distractions. The disruption of normalcy that comes with flight operations (i.e.: bright lights, loud noises, etc.) seem be enhanced at night for during typical times of sleep, and this will certainly result in a very fussy (and noisy) bundle of unhappiness on your hands.

Truly, this is certainly no way to kick-off or complete a vacation. So how do you get around flying late night to save money? Book your vacation at least 4+ months before your travel date – and do it through a vacation package with Costco Travel for even greater savings.

Research and Plan Excursions in Advance

I realize this tip may not be ideal for those who feel that they thrive in spontaneity. However, when it comes to traveling with children on vacation, it’s best that you figure out the type of excursions that you and your family should experience. When doing this in advance, you’ll have time to gain peace of mind as you take steps to make sure that the tour companies you work with are reputable and they are able to accommodate families with babies and young children. In virtually every vacation destination, you’ll find predatory tour companies that don’t look after your best interest. That said, before you travel, plan ahead and research, research, research!

            International Vacation? Pack Familiar Snacks

A lot of great family moments come from traveling to faraway destinations. However, when it comes to kids, taste buds don’t often adapt with the same speed and nimbleness as what is typically commonplace with adults. Play it safe and pack a fair amount of pre-packaged snacks in your carry-on baggage which you and your youngster can enjoy anytime throughout your journey.

One note: Be sure to check the food entry rules for the country that you are traveling to so you can plan accordingly. As a rule, don’t plan on traveling anywhere with fresh fruits as they will be confiscated at your port of entry (and this is especially the case when returning to the U.S.). Also, if you and your child enjoy peanut butter & crackers, you should sandwich those in advance at home and pack them in a storage bag. Why? There’s a standing TSA rule that jars of peanut butter are considered “liquid” and cannot be transported via carry-on baggage.

Embrace Movies, Games and Sleep Apps

Relying on airline inflight entertainment systems and hotel TV services to stave off restlessness in youngsters can sometimes backfire (as these systems can fail, or their content libraries desperately lack the content that you’re looking for). Before heading on your long-awaited vacation, download movies, TV series and games that are specific to your child’s age, and be prepared with a spare smartphone or tablet for their use in a pinch. Doing this can also be of great assistance should you have children that have been diagnosed as neurodivergent.

Also, plan to pack a powerbank to ensure that those devices stay fully charged. You should also pack noise canceling headphones for your children to use during flights or long drives. Also, download sleep apps (designed for their age) to your devices. You’ll find that these apps will come in handy just in case jetlag creeps in during an international trip. You don’t want to find your children wide awake in the middle of the night from jetlag as it will be challenging to deal with during the day.
