    Top Dining Experiences in Jamaica

As one of the most sought-after vacation destinations in the Caribbean, Jamaica is known for its history, culture, stunning views, adventure offerings, phenomenal resorts and culinary offerings. Jamaican cuisine plays such a huge part in the popularity of this vibrant destination which consistently receives a high number of repeat visits from vacationers.

Here’s a list of some of the top dining experiences in Jamaica:

        Jamaican Jerk Chicken with line

Enjoy the robust flavors of Jerk Chicken!

        Throughout Jamaica

Central to the Jamaica’s culinary focus is Jerk. This beloved cooking technique is as authentic to Jamaica as New Orleans Creole cuisine is to the state of Louisiana. Originating from a tribal method to confuse British and Spanish forces from locating them, the “Jerk” process included cooking meats underground to hide evidence of smoke (otherwise giving away their location). It’s interesting: A necessity of war defense created a brilliant way to flavor meats! Before going into an underground oven, meats would first be marinated with a seasoning mix containing: cinnamon, allspice, cayenne, scotch bonnet peppers, brown sugar, citrus juices, etc.

While the traditional underground cooking method isn’t the current go-to approach to preparing Jerk meats, as you will find at Scotchie’s restaurants throughout Jamaica, above ground smoker pits are utilized. Jerk-seasoned meats are placed on, and covered with, aromatic wood logs and leaves. The results are savory and flavorful Jerk meats which are consistently considered some of the very best in Jamaica. If your resort isn’t near a Scotchies, never fear: Most resorts in Jamaica prepare Jerk lunches by their main pool – utilizing similar cooking techniques as Scotchie’s.

Cooked beef in a pastry wrapped in paper.

Jamaican Beef Patty similar to an empanada.

Also within this island nation, locals are evenly split on which restaurant prepares one of their national culinary specialties better: The Jamaican Patty. Similar in concept as the Empanada (which are deep fried), the baked Patty is a portable turnover pastry that’s filled with savory meats. Both Juici Patties and Tastee Patties have a local fanbase in Jamaica that is very similar to what you might find with football fans supporting rival NFL teams here in the US. Getting into conversations with locals who have opposing views about who makes the best patty can be quite a passionate discussion. This much I will say: Both Juici and Tastee make delicious patties. Whichever restaurant you visit, be sure to order a bottle of Jamaican Ting (natural grapefruit soft drink) to accompany your patty.

Cooked lobster, shrimp and crab on a plate

Enjoy a delicious plate of a variety of seafood!

              Ocho Rios

In 1984, Eva Myers opened Evita’s with the goal of being the best little pasta house in Jamaica. With the collection of numerous awards to boast, I’d say that goal has been achieved solidly! Specializing in Northern Italian and Jam-Italian fusion cuisine, Evita’s tantalizes the palate with amazing specialties, such as: King Fish Rundown, Pollo Mama Mia, and my personal Jam-Italian favorites: One Love Alfredo and the Jerk Spaghetti!

                  Negril

Some of the most authentic and flavorful traditional Jamaican cuisine is Murphy’s West End Restaurant. Murphy was the Father of current owner and chef, Leniel, and is one of the most highly rated dining establishments in Jamaica. Located in Negril’s West End, the restaurant is very unassuming with its rustic appearance and laid-back atmosphere. The meals that Chef Leniel creates within his home-styled kitchen leave more fanciful restaurants trailing in his dust. Fresh and flavorful dishes such as Lobster Pasta, Vegetable Stew and Jerk Chicken Alfredo are all popular menu items which will satiate your appetite.

                    Montego Bay

A 15-minute drive from Montego Bay’s international airport, will land you at The HouseBoat Grill Restaurant. Specializing in sophisticated Jamaican cuisine, this restaurant excels its seafood specialties. Lobster reigns supreme here, so be sure to start with their Panko-crusted Lobster Cake (which is genuinely an elevated crab cake – just with lobster added instead). For your main, be sure to order their Lobster Carbonara Americano which is served with healthy-sized portions of lobster that has been infused with Scotch Bonnet Peppers (read: It’s spicy!) and served over Linguine with a bacon cream reduction. If you’re not into seafood but prefer fish, the Baked Snapper Fillet has an almond panko crust and is served with a parmesan risotto.
