Unintentionally, Aaron Spelling’s TV series “The Love Boat” catapulted sea cruise vacations from something that was becoming an archaic way to travel (when compared to destination vacation opportunities), to an industry that has grown exponentially since the series premiered on ABC in 1976. It was Princess Cruises® that helped usher in the new renaissance of cruising through its partnership with the Mr. Spelling’s production company which put the cruise line and its iconic logo at the forefront. Back then, audiences were wowed by the modernity of Princess’s Pacific Princess® cruise liner (which was the core cast member of the series – being “The Love Boat”) and its customer-focused cast of characters. Fast forward to today: Cruising has kept with the times and innovated. How fitting is for Princess Cruises to, yet again, usher in an all new renaissance to cruising and setting a high standard when it comes to understated luxury with its recently launched Sun Princess®.

Sitting at 177,500 gross tons, this 1,133 foot vessel makes Sun Princess the largest cruise ship ever built in Italy. The engineering lengths which Princess and its shipbuilder took to ensure a smooth and eco-friendly ride for all who sail in her is nothing short of a marvel. This multilevel, glass-enclosed dome features electrifying acrobatic performances created in partnership with the renowned Cirque Éloize.
Every guest sailing aboard Sun Princess is provided with an RFID “Medallion®” which, when worn, will allow guests to move about the ship effortlessly and be easily recognized by crew members. For instance, if you were to walk up to a coffee bar, the server will immediately know who you are and will address you by your name. After having several coffees throughout your sailing, eventually Princess’s intuitive system will prompt servers – at any coffee bar onboard – to inquire if you would like to order the beverage that you have enjoyed in the past.
Plus, you are able to place a food or beverage order anywhere on the ship and your order will be delivered to you via OceanNow™ using the Medallion. Additionally, the Medallion serves as your stateroom key – but it’s touchless. As you’re approaching your stateroom or suite with your Medallion, Princess’ system will trigger your stateroom or suite door to unlock (as evidenced by an illuminating green ring which appears on the door handle, signaling that you are permitted to enter).
