Nayarit: Small, Welcoming Towns
Situated in an idyllic location on the Mexican Riviera, Riviera Nayarit offers vacationers jaw-dropping beautiful beaches, lush & verdant mountains and recreational offerings that are the envy of the region. Boasting over 200 miles of coastline, I noticed that Riviera Nayarit is far from an over-developed resort destination, and this fact only adds to its charm. In short, if you are seeking a destination that has a relaxed beach vibe, that’s mixed with the added touches of refinement and sophistication, then Riviera Nayarit is for you. While you’re visiting, I highly recommend that you experience some of the smaller adjacent cities within the region as they are chocked full of culture, adventure, great food and amazing scenery.

Sayulita
Sayulita and its beaches are a magnet for surfers from around the world – but this doesn’t mean that only pro surfers will enjoy a vacation here as currents tend to favor even the most novice surfer. As one of Mexico’s handpicked “Pueblo Magico” cities, this unique surfer’s village offers a walkable and upscale environment with plenty of shopping and handicrafts that are created by the local Huichol indigenous tribe.
Compostela
Another Pueblo Magico town that you cannot miss while visiting the Nayarit is Compostela. In addition to being a popular area for surfers, the city beams with an abundance of historic buildings some of which are the oldest buildings within the Nayarit. When it comes to handmade goods, the local artisans of Compostela will impress you with their appreciation of time-honored leatherwork and other pieces. And if you are a coffee drinker like I am (double shot espresso everyday LOL!), you should take a coffee farm tour. Much like a wine vineyard, coffee farmers pamper their crops - and their processes are just as interesting. From seeding, to maturation, to roasting – and all the aromatic steps in between(and yes, you will sample coffee from the farm during your visit). Compostela is ideal for active seniors and couples.

San Blas
I had no idea that Mexico had accessible mangroves before my recent visit – but I was very surprised to learn that the mangroves of San Blas were teeming with crocodiles, with some trees over 100 years old. Within La Tovara National Park, you can take a mangrove and estuary tour within a speedboat to experience crocodiles, turtles and birds co-existing in their natural environments. A visit here is ideal for nature lovers and those with young children who appreciate animals.
Jala
In recent years, Jala’s fame has increased due to its yearly Holy Week celebrations and related activities. This unassuming town is one which is full of very friendly and welcoming people that want to make sure that you stay impressed within their safe and environs. As it’s always the case, the people of Jala love cacophonous celebrations - and they even have one celebrating corn (FYI… Jala is home to the world’s largest corn on the cob – and they even have a museum dedicated to this popular grain). However, of the celebrations taking place throughout the year in Jala, Holy Week is next level. Also, while spending time in Jala, be sure to enjoy a meal at Fonda Doña Melva for abundant and flavorful tostadas, tacos and more - and the guacamole is also quite delicious! Jala is ideal for families with young children and those seeking a rustic off-the-beaten-path experience.
