Seymour Narrows, near Campbell River, was the site of the largest non-nuclear explosion in history in 1958. Over a thousand tons of dynamite were used to blast away over 300,000 tons of rock from a treacherous marine hazard known as Ripple Rock. Located in Discovery Passage, Seymour Narrows is the narrowest point on the Inside Passage.

Day 2 Queen Charlotte Sound/Canada

In Queen Charlotte Sound, three broad troughs over 350 m in depth slice inland across this shelf and are separated by wide shallow banks. Pacific cod, sole, lingcod, and sablefish are found throughout the continental shelf but are concentrated around the shallow banks. Salmon rivers dissect the mainland coast. Clams, shrimp,p and prawns are relatively abundant. Over a million seabirds breed in the region, including the largest concentrations of rhinoceros auklets, and Leach's and fork-tailed storm petrels in British Columbia. Queen Charlotte Sound is also a vital feeding area for millions of breeding, summering, and migrating seabirds and waterfowl. Grey whales, harbor and Dall's porpoises, Pacific white-sided dolphins and northern fur seals are common visitors, while harbor seals and Stellar sea lions make the region home. About 190 resident killer whales in 16 pods (close-knit family groups) cruise the southern waters of the region. A small population of sea otters has recently established itself along the coast, a positive sign for the recovery of this endangered species. This region is not yet represented in the national marine conservation areas system. Four representative marine areas have been identified: Blackfish Sound, Queen Charlotte Strait, Goose Island Bank, and Laredo Sound.

With views of island-studded waters and stately spruce forests reaching the water's edge, Sitka is considered Alaska's most beautiful seaside town. Sitka's past is a unique blend of Tlingit culture and Russian history. Our historic and scenic community is situated on Baranof Island, nestled between forested mountains and the great Pacific Ocean, on the outer waters of Alaska's Inside Passage. Sitka offers a combination of Native culture, Russian history, and Alaskan wilderness which will provide a diverse and unequaled experience. Wildlife adds to Sitka's natural beauty. Take to the water for a picturesque boat trip or kayaking adventure among nearby islands or charter a boat to nearby fishing grounds to fish for world-class salmon and halibut.

In Yakutat Bay, you can see Harbor seals resting on bergy bits and growlers and brash ice on the way to Hubbard Glacier. The brash ice comes mostly from the massive Hubbard Glacier at the head of the bay.

Stretching over 90 miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. You may hear the rumble and see the monumental splash as the glacier severs into great ice chunks, known as "calves."

Humpback whales feed in Icy Strait above North Chichagof Island, an important travel corridor for many marine mammals, including federally threatened Steller's sea lions. The area's coastal marshes and mudflats are important as resting areas for shorebirds and waterfowl and provide spring-feeding areas for brown bears. Marbled murrelets feed in large numbers within the waters of Icy Strait and nest in the island's coastal old-growth forest.

Lynn Canal is an inlet into the mainland of southeast Alaska. Lynn Canal runs about 90 miles from the inlets of the Chilkat River south to Chatham Strait and Stephens Passage. At over 2,000 feet in depth, the Lynn Canal is the deepest fjord in North America and one of the deepest and longest in the world as well.

Tracy Arm, like Glacier Bay, is another fjord in the southeast that features tidewater glaciers and steep 2000-foot granite walls that rise straight out of the water. This steep-sided fjord, 50 miles southeast of Juneau, is highlighted by a pair of tidewater glaciers and a gallery of icebergs that float down the length of it. This 30-mile arm was an ideal choice for novice kayakers as calm water is the norm here due to the protection the steep and narrow fjord wall provides. You are almost guaranteed to see seals inside the arm and there is a good possibility of spotting whales on the into the arm.

Day 9 Stephens Passage

Stephens Passage is a long stretch of dark water filling the gap between mountain ranges in Southeast Alaska. The water is deadly cold and rich with sea life. Fog and low clouds usually hang in the Passage, which is an arm of the Pacific. Fjords with emerald rivers pour in and it is lined with conifers, blue stone, and rocky hollows. It rains often. It is indescribably beautiful.In Stephens Passage, on a chilly day, with low-hanging fog, here is what you can see: pods of Orca knifing through brackish inlets; humpback whales, their flukes high, plunging towards the ocean floor; clear water gushing from crevasses; a brown bear with three cubs scouring the beaches for salmon remains; blue glaciers calving into bays with rifle-shot thunder; harbor seal; bald eagles; hundreds of birds, their calls filling the air. The wilderness is almost inviolate.

Wrangell -- the only Alaska town to fly the Russian, British, and American flags -- sits at the northern tip of Wrangell Island. It's near the mouth of the Stikine River, a longtime trade route into the Canadian interior. The Wrangell area may have first been lived in by humans 8,000 years ago, according to scientists who have studied a collection of petroglyphs found in Wrangell and neighboring places.What is now Wrangell was settled in 1811 by Russians, who traded for furs with the Tlingit Indians and named the island after Ferdinand von Wrangel, the manager of the Russian-American Co. In 1834, the Russians built a fort, Redoubt Saint Dionysius, which 10 years later they leased to the British Hudson's Bay Co., whose officials named it Fort Stikine, according to the Alaska Department of Community Development. The Tlingits who lived south of the fort and the British competed for trade routes on the swift Stikine, but the Tlingits suffered two epidemics of smallpox and lost half their population by 1840. The fort was abandoned in 1849 when the furs were depleted, but it remained under the British flag until Alaska was bought by the United States in 1867.The United States established Fort Wrangell in 1868. The community grew as raucous gold prospectors came in 1861, 1874-7,7, and 1987. Thousands of miners traveled up the Stikine to the Cassiar District of British Columbia in the 1870s and to the Klondike in 1897.Between gold rushes, a cannery opened up in 1889, followed by a sawmill that provided packing boxes and construction lumber. By 1916, fishing and forest products from the Tongass National Forest had become the primary industries; four canneries and a cold storage plant were constructed by the late 1920s. The Alaska Pulp Corp. sawmill, Wrangell's largest employer, closed in late 1994. It reopened several years later as Silver Bay Logging.Wrangell, population 2,300, is also developing a dive fishery. Several dozen divers harvest sea urchins, sea cucumber, sr, and geoducks, large, burrowing clams. The town also supports the mining industry along the Stikine.Visitors -- whose transportation to Wrangell is by cruise line, state f, er, y and airplane -- should dress for cool summers. The winters are mild, and the annual precipitation averages 82 inches, including the meltwater from 64 inches of snow. The average summer temperatures range from 42 to 64, and the winter temperatures run from 21 to 44.

Day 10 Stikine Strait

The Stikine Strait is a strait in the Alexander Archipelago of Alaska, located between Zarembo Island to the west and Etolin and Woronkofski Islands just southwest of the City of Wrangell.

Rudyerd Bay winds its way northeast from Behm Canal about ten miles in. The bay has several arms extending off at three points, and all the routes are lined with 4000-foot snow-capped mountains and waterfalls all along the way. Some of the mountains have vertical rock faces extending straight up from the water, stretching out horizontally for over half a mile.

Day 11 Misty Fjords

Misty Fjords is an unspoiled coastal ecosystem ideal for exploring by kayak. Deep fjords are surrounded by countless glacier-fed streams and rivers, each attracting your curiosity. Nearly half of all king salmon spawning and rearing streams in southeast Alaska are located within Misty Fjords. Shear cliffs, towing over 3000 feet, polished by Pleistocene era glaciers, plummet directly into the waters you paddle. You will experience the fresh breath of countless waterfalls as you nose your kayak up to waters cascading into the sea. Ancient forests of Western hemlock, Sitka spruce, and Alaska cedar everywhere grace this primeval coastal wilderness area. You will have the opportunity to enter these lush rainforests and explore spectacular mountain lakes only a short climb from where you beach your kayak.

This crescent-shaped island is situated just off the northeast coast of Vancouver Island, approximately 180 miles by water from the city of Vancouver. Located on the beautiful Inside Passage of British Columbia, Alert Bay can be reached by taking a 40-minute ferry ride from Port McNeill. Johnstone Strait is a glacier-carved waterway between the northeast coast of Vancouver Island and the rugged mountains of mainland British Columbia. Its hundreds of picturesque islands, luxuriant forests, artistic native cultures, colorful marine life, and the highest density of killer whales anywhere in the world, create a fantastic sea kayaking destination. Summers are generally beautiful, with only occasional rain and fog. Orcas (killer whales) congregate here during the summer months and bald eagles dot tree tops along the shoreline, both attracted by salmon runs in the straits. Although the sea here is home to porpoises, sea lions, and many species of sea birds, it is the Orcas that captivate attention by blowing, spy hopping, and breaching. To observe a pod of these magnificent creatures up close is among life's great thrills.Our Johnstone Strait sea kayaking trip begins near the town of Port McNeill, located on Vancouver Island's remote northeastern coast. Paddling stable two-person kayaks, you can watch and listen for Orcas and visit ancient native village sites. This is an exciting trip of wilderness camping and memorable images.
