The waterfront district has unique arts galleries and boutiques and one of the largest Chinatown areas in Japan. Yokohama is the home of Japan's Central Baseball League and Japan's first coffee shop. As a result, Sendai is called the “City of Trees.” Sendai has many universities and is also well-known as an academic city. Its universities and research institutes have been contributing to the development of the high-tech industry. Sendai also values history and culture. Many traditional events, such as the Sendai Tanabata Festival, continue to this day. The Sendai International Music Competition and the Johzenji Streetjazz Festival are also held in the city, along with many theatrical performances. Sendai is a modern city that retains its natural beauty and tradition.

Day 3 Port of Call Hakodate Arrival 10:00a.m. Departure 5:00p.m.

Overview

Hakodate is a city and port located in Oshima. It is the capital city of Oshima Sub prefecture. The city is overlooked by Hakodateyama (Mount Hakodate), a lumpy, totally-forested mountain. The summit of the mountain is easily reached by either hiking trail cable car, or car. The nighttime view from the summit is renowned all over Japan as one of the loveliest sights in the country. A not-so-well known local nickname of the bumpy mountain is Gagyuzan ("Mount Cow's-back"), which alludes to the way the mountain's shape resembles that of a resting cow. Hakodate is home to the famous European-style Goryokaku fort, which was built in the shape of a five-pointed star in 1866. It is now used as a public park. The park is a popular spot in Hokkaido for hanami (cherry blossom viewing). The small but bustling city is also famous as the site of Hijikata Toshizo's last stand. The city is also known for Hakodate Shio Ramen, where instead of having pork cutlet placed inside the soup, sliced squid is used. On a similar note, Hakodate's city fish is the squid. Every year (around July) the city gets together for the Hakodate Port Festival. Hordes of citizens gather in the streets to dance a wiggly dance known as the Ika-odori (Squid Dance), the name of which describes the dance appropriately. The glowing lights of squid-catching boats can be seen in the waters surrounding the city.

Day 4 Port of Call Sapporo Arrival 8:00a.m. Departure 4:00p.m.

As long as tourists are in Saporro they might as well enjoy themselves and this is actually one of the specialties of the city. It has more nightlife than any other city north of Tokyo. The Susukino district has countless bars, nightclubs and hostess bars. During daytime tourists should visit the Botanical Garden in the Batchelor Memorial Museum, the Clocktower -the major landmark of Sapporo- and the Beer Brewery, the first in Japan. The Geijitsu no mori(Art Park) located just outside of Makomanai is a great place to spend a sunny day wandering the outdoor sculpture garden(approx.600yen).Tourists can take a bus from Bus-Centre Mae bus terminal. Day 6 Port of Call Kanazawa Arrival 8:00a.m. Departure 4:00p.m.

Overview

Kanazawa is a castle town that was ruled over by the Maeda family for three centuries after the first lord Toshiie Maeda entered Kanazawa Castle in 1583. The development of its special products like rice, sake, sweets, etc. was due to its temperate and rainy climate with heavy snow in winter. The city is surrounded by the Japan Alps, Hakusan National Park and Noto Peninsula National Park. Two rivers run through the city; the Sai is said to be a lively masculine river and the Asano to be a sweet, feminine river. Such a natural background of great beauty gives the city a relaxed feeling. Since the Kaga Clan invited many artists and craftsmen to this area, it achieved a high level of craftsmanship that continues to flourish to this day. The buildings that gave birth to these traditions stand tranquilly and blend in with the modern atmosphere in Kanazawa to create a charming ancient castle town.

Day 7 Port of Call Busan Arrival 3:00p.m. Departure 10:00p.m.

Overview

Busan/Pusan is Korea's second largest city. Tourists often come to this region to hike and to visit the Buddhist Temples located deep within the region's mountains. The Beomeosa Temple, founded in 678 AD, is perhaps one of the most frequented temples in the area and is always packed with worshipers and tourists. For art buffs, Busan offers several museums and historical buildings. If scenery is your thing, try visiting the Dongbaek Island, or bird watch at the Nakdong river estuary.

Day 8 Port of Call Nagasaki Arrival 9:00a.m. Departure 7:00p.m.

Overview

Nagasaki is the capital and the largest city of Nagasaki Prefecture located at the south-western coast of Kyushu. Nagasaki lies at the head of a long bay which forms the best natural harbor on the southern Japanese home island of Kyushu. The main commercial and residential area of the city lies on a small plain near the end of the bay. Two rivers divided by a mountain spur form the two main valleys in which the city lies. The heavily built-up area of the city is confined by the terrain to less than 4 square miles out of a total of about 35 square miles in the city as a whole. The city was rebuilt after the war, albeit dramatically changed, as any city would be after such colossal damage. New temples were built and new churches as well, since the Christian presence never died out and even increased dramatically after the war. Some of the rubble was left as a memorial, such as a one-legged torii gate and a stone arch near ground zero. New structures were also raised as memorials, such as the Atomic Bomb Museum. Nagasaki remains first and foremost a port city, supporting a rich shipping industry and setting a strong example of perseverance and peace.

Day 9 Port of Call Kagoshima Arrival 6:00a.m. Departure 2:00p.m.

Overview

Kagoshima is a bright sunny tropical city. Tourists can see smoke coming from the magnificent Mt. Sakurajima across Kinko Bay. The city has been known as the Naples of the Orient for many years. It prospered as a castle town of the powerful Lord Shimazu, who had 770 thousand "koku" of rice during the Edo Period. The city still maintains the strong spirit of Takamori Saigo and Toshimichi Okubo, heroes of the Meiji Restoration. The most famous historical spot related to them is the extensive Iso Garden, former villa of Lord Shimazu. The garden´s pond is representative of Kinko Bay, which is north of downtown, and the hill is representative of Mt. Sakurajima. Sightseeing spots in the city are mostly related to Lord Shimazu and Takamori Saigo. Tsurumaru Castle (Reimei Hall), where Lord Shimazu lived, the great view from Shiroyama, where the last fort of the Saigo army was located during the Satsuma Rebellion, Nanshu Cavern, where Saigo barricaded himself, Nanshu Cemetery, where the dead from the Satsuma Rebellion are buried, and the high-tech Museum of the Meiji Restoration (Ishin Furusato-kan) are located along the Kotsuki River. The museum has information about places where Saigo, Okubo, Iwao Oyama, and Heihachiro Togo were born. Tenmonkan in the downtown area offers all types of souvenirs, including Kagoshima dishes such as sakezushi, pork bone, and kibinago, as well as shochu, Kagoshima Ramen, Satsumayaki, satsumaage, and karukan.
