Its metropolitan area has a population of 18.7 million and is one of the largest urban areas in the world. New York City is an international center for business, finance, fashion, medicine, entertainment, media, and culture, with an extraordinary collection of museums, galleries, performance venues, media outlets, international corporations, and financial markets. The city is also home to the headquarters of the United Nations, and many of the world's most famous skyscrapers. Popularly known as the "Big Apple", the "City That Never Sleeps", or the "Capital of the World", the city attracts large numbers of immigrants, as well as people from all over the United States who come for its culture, diversity, fast-paced lifestyle, cosmopolitanism, and economic opportunity. The city is also currently distinguished for having the lowest crime rate among major American cities.
Southampton is a port city on England’s south coast. It’s home to the Sea City Museum, with an interactive model of the Titanic, which departed from Southampton in 1912. Nearby, Southampton City Art Gallery specializes in modern British art. Solent Sky Museum features vintage aircraft like the iconic Spitfire. Tudor House & Garden displays artifacts covering over 800 years of history, including a penny-farthing bike.
Linked with Brugge, its historic metropolis, by a 7.5-mile canal, Zeebrugge is a seaside resort looking to the future. The international port, jutting far out into the sea, doesn't prevent holidaymakers from frolicking on the fine little sandy beach. On the seafront, hotels and cafés give tourists their warmest welcome. Being Belgium's leading fishing port, Zeebrugge has quite a lot of fishmongers' shops. Besides being a passenger port with regular ferry services between the United Kingdom and the continent, Zeebrugge also has an attractive marina that can accommodate some 100 vessels. Zeebrugge also enjoys a very convenient geographical location, just a few miles away from the beautiful Brugge, the fashionable seaside resort of Knokke, and the picturesque village of Lissewege.During the summer season, the beach invites you to (sun) bathing, play, and relax Autumn and winter are the right seasons to take a firm walk along the seaside. On the western dam, a promenade reaches far out into the open sea. At the foot of the dam the "St. George Memorial" commemorates the Battle of Zeebrugge (23.4.1918) on which occasion the British Royal Navy finally put the German U-Boot base out of action. The City Community House on Marktplein is the seat of the city administration. The premises also have a socio-cultural function.
On the shores of the Nordfjord, little Olden is a gateway to a spectacular ice wilderness of stunning dimensions. Climb an amazing zig-zag road past towering cliffs and tumbling waterfalls to the giant Jostedal glacier--the largest icefield in Europe, where summer skiers zip over ice moguls! Or take a horse-drawn carriage to a beautiful lake watered by the blue ice massif of Briksdal Glacier.
The beautiful Innvik-fjord, an inner arm of Nordfjord, is typical of the scenery around Olden, Loen, and Stryn.
Nordfjord consists of the municipalities of Stryn, Hornindal, Gloppen, Eid, Bremanger, Vågsøy, and Selje. A journey along the Nordfjord offers an exceptional variety of scenery ranging from blue glacier arms and towering mountains to fertile valleys and deep lakes, taking you right out to the coast and the relentless breakers of the Stadhavet Sea. The Jostedalsbreen glacier gives the rivers and lakes a special green hue that is found only near the glacier. Here, there is plenty of refreshing water and fresh air for everyone. The numerous attractions of Nordfjord lie waiting for you. You can take part in some of our many activities or just wander in the sun along white sandy beaches, breathing in the fresh air.
Skjolden is a small regional center on the Lusterfjord, the innermost branch of Sognefjord.
The innermost arm of the Sognefjord is called the Lustrafjord. At its end, there is the village of Skjolden, which has access to Jotunheimen National Park. In earlier times, transport from Bergen to the Scandinavian inland and vice versa was done by boat from Bergen to Skjolden and from there on a simple road over the highlands.
When you are travelling along the Sognefjord, and especially by boat, and feel you have had your fill of vertical mountainsides and cascading waterfalls for a day, you are advised to turn your attention to the small high farms clinging on for dear life. For many of these farms - and some are still inhabited - the fjord is in many cases the only way to travel. You may also observe on your way in or out of the Sognefjord that the weather may change quite dramatically. At the mouth of the fjord, the climate is maritime, whereas the innermost parts of the 200-km-long fjord have a much drier inland climate. It is a well-established fact that it is not easy to sail on the Sognefjord. The currents may be strong in some places, and they may quickly change directions. In some places, winds may blow hard whereas the very same wind direction may give calm waters around the next point of land. Some days you may see differently coloured current patterns on the fjord surface, and these are extensions of the river flows. These fluvial currents guide the wild salmon back to their river of birth to spawn. Occasionally you may still observe the wooden structures formerly used by local farmers as observation posts to catch the wild salmon in nets. This fishery used to be an important export industry, and in the winter ice was cut in the lakes and stored in special houses to be used in the summertime to keep the salmon as fresh as possible. Nowadays the wild salmon is an endangered species, but when you visit Laerdal and the Norwegian Wild Salmon Centre, you may learn more about the salmon and traditional fishing methods. If you are very lucky, you may even get a chance to see the "live" spawning rituals of the wild salmon. At the Sognefjord Aquarium in Balestr, you may experience the interesting diversity of marine life in the fjord.
Ísafjörður is a town in the Westfjords region of northwest Iceland. It's known for its dramatic landscapes. The old town has wooden houses with corrugated tin roofs built by fishing merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Westfjords Heritage Museum has exhibits on the town’s maritime history, including a collection of old fishing boats. The old hospital, now a cultural center, contains archives and photography.
Iceland's capital and largest city, Reykjavik, is on the coast. The city is home to the National and Saga museums, which trace Iceland’s Viking history. The striking concrete Hallgrimskirkja church and rotating Perlan glass dome offer sweeping views of the sea and nearby hills. Near the village of Grindavik, the geothermal Blue Lagoon spa exemplifies the island’s volcanic activity.
